About this route
Montserrat Monastery lies about 60 km northwest of Barcelona Airport, a 55–70 minute drive on the A-2 and C-55 to Monistrol de Montserrat, then the BP-1121 mountain road up to the sanctuary. It is one of Catalonia’s iconic day trips: the Benedictine abbey, the basilica with the Black Madonna (La Moreneta), the jagged mountain and the valley views. We take you straight to the monastery esplanade, without going through central Barcelona.

- Is there a bus from Barcelona to Montserrat monastery?
- Yes, but only one a day in each direction. Autocars Julià runs a coach from beside Barcelona-Sants station up to the monastery in the morning, returning in the late afternoon; the R2 Nord from the airport stops at Sants. Separately, the Aerobús calls at Plaça Espanya, where FGC R5 trains leave for the cable car and the rack railway. Check current schedules.
- Can you drop us in Monistrol so we ride the rack railway up?
- Yes. The cremallera's Monistrol Vila station has a large car park, around 1,000 spaces, which makes it a practical drop-off point, and from there the rack railway climbs to the monastery. If you're travelling with suitcases, check the railway's luggage conditions beforehand, as well as the time of the last train down if you plan to return the same way.
