Vallter 2000 closes off the Ter valley at its head, above Setcases in the Ripollès, where the river starts. With the Cerdanya resorts it is one of the two closest ski areas to Barcelona: 162 km and about 2 h 35 from Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), or a shorter run from the city itself.
Who Vallter suits
Short trips. It is a small resort, and the reason to choose it is the drive, not the lift map: you can land in the morning and be on snow the same day, or come up from Barcelona for a weekend without losing half of it to the road. It works well for families and for skiers who are still learning. If you want a large domain and a week of variety, Andorra or Baqueira are the honest answer instead. We do not publish piste kilometres or lift counts here; take those from the official resort site.
A different valley from the Cerdanya
Vallter is not reached the way La Molina and Masella are. There is no Cadí tunnel on this route: the road heads inland through Vic and Ripoll, then follows the Ter upstream through Camprodon, Llanars and Vilallonga de Ter to Setcases, and climbs from there to the resort at the head of the valley. Because it is a separate valley facing a different way, locals often check conditions at both before deciding where to ski. The 2 h 35 is an estimate without traffic, not a guaranteed arrival time.
Winter on this road
The stretch above Setcases is the one that counts: a narrow mountain road, exposed in places, that can need winter equipment while the valley floor is clear. For mountain routes we assign a vehicle that is ready for them: our fleet meets the mandatory winter equipment rules and, when conditions call for it, the assigned vehicle goes up with chains on board. In Spain the obligation is triggered by the R-412 sign on the stretch, not by the calendar, and only 3PMSF tyres or chains count. Catalonia activates winter restrictions under the NEUCAT plan.
Why not the train and bus
The rail line serves Ripoll, not the upper Ter valley, so public transport means a train from Barcelona and then a valley bus that does not reach the resort, followed by a taxi — with skis and boots at each change, on winter timetables that thin out at weekends. On a route this short, the transfer is what makes the short journey actually short.
Season dates
Vallter 2000 had not confirmed its 2026-27 opening and closing dates as of 12 September 2026. Historically the Pyrenean season runs from December to late March. Check the official resort calendar before you commit to dates.
Skis and boards
Skis and boards travel as special equipment: €15 per set per passenger, with a limit per vehicle — one set in a saloon, two or three in a minivan, four or more in a van. Tell us how many sets you are carrying when you book: if they do not fit, we quote the larger vehicle before you pay, never after.
- Landing and skiing the same day? Give us the flight number and we plan the pickup around the real landing time.
- Tell us whether you want the resort itself or a village in the valley — Setcases, Vilallonga de Ter or Camprodon.
- On a snowy morning the climb above Setcases is slower than the map suggests; leave margin.
- Book the return leg at the same time, especially on a Sunday afternoon.
- Travel times are estimates without traffic, never guaranteed arrival times.
