The Ebro Delta is the largest wetland in Catalonia: a flat world of rice paddies, lagoons such as l’Encanyissada and la Tancada, and long sandy spits where flamingos and herons feed. El Poblenou del Delta sits right in the middle of it, and L’Algadir del Delta is a small, modern hotel in the village, with rooms decorated after the birds and wildlife of the park, a pool and bikes to explore the dykes.
A nature reserve with no railway
The delta is wonderful to explore slowly and difficult to reach quickly. Trains on the coastal line stop at L’Aldea-Amposta-Tortosa, across the river, and the few local buses are built around village life, not flight times. From Barcelona Airport, the journey by public transport takes most of a day; by road it is about 2h15.
Arrive in time for the rice
Many guests come for the restaurant as much as for the birds: rice with eel and duck, seafood from the bay and vegetables from the delta. A fixed-price transfer takes you from BCN arrivals to the hotel door, with your flight tracked and up to 60 minutes of free waiting at the airport, so you can plan a dinner booking on arrival day.
Practical tips
- Booked a table at the restaurant on arrival day? Tell us the time and we plan the pickup with margin.
- Spring and autumn are the best seasons for birdwatching; the rice fields are flooded and green from late spring.
- Bring binoculars and insect repellent; the hotel rents bikes for the flat dyke roads.
- Book the return in advance: taxis are scarce in the delta villages.
